General FAQ

What is BSides?
Each BSides is a community-driven framework for building events for and by information security community members. The goal is to expand the spectrum of conversation beyond the traditional confines of space and time. It creates opportunities for individuals to both present and participate in an intimate atmosphere that encourages collaboration. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. It is where conversations for the next-big-thing are happening.

Talks and CFP

What types of talk should I submit? Can I submit multiple times to the CFP?

This year’s general themes are “Then,” “Now,” and “Neither Then nor Now.” If your idea doesn’t fit into one of those areas, submit it anyway.  If you have more than one idea for a talk, submit it.

For more ideas on talks and CFPs see this article from Circle City Conf’s Kat Sweet, DefCon’s Speakers Corner FAQs, and BSides Co-Founder Jack Daniel.

How long are the talks?

Plan to speak for 45 minutes, with some flexibility for questions. If you’d like to do a demo or non-slide-based talk just mention it in your submission.

Who should submit?

First time presenters are strongly encouraged to submit! If you know anyone who would be a great speaker, please encourage him/her to submit.

Will the talks be recorded?

Yes. However, we do respect your privacy, and all you need to do is ask us not to record your talk.

When will the CFP close?

May 26, 2017

When will speakers be notified? When will the speaker lineup be released?

About 2 weeks after the CFP closes.

Tickets and Attending

When will tickets go on sale?

Mid-May. Watch our Twitter for updates.

Why isn’t it free?

Because this year’s BSides is not following any other conference we do not have an estimate for attendees. We are charging a small fee to ensure accurate attendee information. We need more precise headcounts to host this event in a central location with amenities. If you have questions about the ticket policy, email us at ticketsATbsideschicago.org

Is parking available?

Yes. The Chicago Hilton offers garage self parking and valet and we will have special rates TBD. Otherwise, try Chicago’s own SpotHero to find day-of parking: https://spothero.com/chicago/chicago-hilton-parking

Is the building accessible?

Yes. The Chicago Hilton has accessible parking, parking spaces, entrances, elevators, gender neutral bathrooms, and accommodates service animals. The hotel is near public transportation and the South Shore Metra line. See directions from the hotel here.

Can I bring my friend/spouse/child with me?

Of course! They just need to register. We welcome non-technical folks and anyone interested in learning more about infosec.
We do not recommend the event for anyone <18 years old, and will require ID for anyone who might be 18 – 21 years old if / when alcohol is served. Please bear in mind this is a professional event that caters to adults and some talk content might not be appropriate for all audiences.

Help and Volunteering

How can I help BSides Chicago?

You can volunteer to help organizers, spread the word about the event, submit to talk on the CFP, or sponsor.

Why should I sponsor?

Support the Chicago infosec community, get to know the best talent and get brand credit for sponsoring one of the most anticipated security events of the year.

There are 4 levels of Sponsorship: Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. See the sponsor page for more info.
